Born on July 22, 1896 in Lower East Side New York, Marc Huehn was an American-born German cinematographer whose claim to fame is a collection of film documentaries and images taken during the most severe economic setback of the 20th century, the Great Depression. Although much of Marc Huehn work vanished during the Second World War, those that survived the turbulent climate of the war give accurate and realistic glimpses of New York during the 1930s.

Born in a working class neighborhood, Marc Huehn’s first taste of labor was in a steam laundry shop run by his uncle where he worked as a laundry collector and deliveryman for New York hostels and inns. In the succeeding years, Marc Huehn, then already reaching adulthood, met a man who owned a shop that featured old lithographs, Polaroid films, cameras, and moving pictures. Exposure to such sparked Huehn’s interest. By the time he reached twenty-five, Marc had saved enough to buy his first Polaroid camera and started taking images of common, day-to-day activities around his city.

Marc Huehn’s earliest work featured still photographs of destitute immigrants and prostitutes in New York. As his vision and artistry developed, he planned to travel in Europe to shoot in Germany, France and England. However, the economic conditions of his time forced him to stay in New York and shoot images that depict the individual suffering of New Yorkers instead.
